Clinical Overview

Niacinamide is an amide of nicotinic acid and a precursor to the cofactors NAD and NADP. In cosmetic applications, it is exceptionally well-studied for its effects on skin barrier function, hyperpigmentation, and sebum regulation.

The Concentration Myth (The 10% Problem)

A pervasive trend in the industry is formulating Niacinamide at 10% or even 20%. However, clinical literature demonstrates that efficacy plateaus at 5%. Formulations exceeding this concentration offer no additional therapeutic benefit and significantly increase the risk of skin irritation, erythema, and barrier disruption.

Formulation Considerations: Niacinamide + L-Ascorbic Acid

Historically, formulators were warned against combining Niacinamide and L-Ascorbic Acid due to the formation of a yellow complex (Niacinamide Ascorbate) and the potential conversion to Nicotinic Acid (which causes flushing). However, this reaction requires high heat and extended time. In standard consumer usage, applying a 5% Niacinamide serum alongside a 15% L-Ascorbic Acid serum is generally safe, though formulating them into a single aqueous system remains challenging due to disparate pH requirements (pH 6.0 vs pH 3.0).
