Clinical Overview

Unlike Alpha Hydroxy Acids (AHAs) which are water-soluble, Salicylic Acid is lipophilic (lipid-soluble). This property allows it to penetrate through the sebum within the pilosebaceous unit (pores) to exfoliate the pore lining, making it the gold standard for comedonal acne treatment.

Formulation Mechanics

Formulating with Salicylic Acid is notoriously difficult due to its insolubility in water. It requires specific solubilizers such as Propanediol, Propylene Glycol, Ethanol, or specialized surfactants (e.g., Cocamidopropyl Dimethylamine) to keep it from recrystallizing in the bottle.

Free Acid Value (FAV)

The efficacy of a BHA relies entirely on its Free Acid Value. At a pH of 3.0 (its pKa value), roughly 50% of the salicylic acid is in its free, un-ionized form. As the pH rises to 4.0, less than 10% is un-ionized, drastically reducing its exfoliating power. A 2% Salicylic Acid serum at pH 5.0 is effectively inert for exfoliation.
