The acid mantle is a complex hydro-lipid film that covers the stratum corneum. It is composed of sebum (secreted by sebaceous glands), sweat (eccrine glands), and the metabolic by-products of the skin's resident microbiome.

Functions of an Acidic Environment
- Microbiome Regulation: Pathogenic bacteria (like Staphylococcus aureus) thrive at a neutral pH (7.0). An acidic environment inhibits their colonization while supporting commensal bacteria (like Staphylococcus epidermidis).
- Enzyme Activation: The enzymes responsible for synthesizing ceramides (β-glucocerebrosidase and acidic sphingomyelinase) require a pH of ~4.5 to 5.0 to function. If skin pH rises, ceramide production drops, leading to barrier impairment.
- Desquamation: The enzymes that break down the 'glue' holding dead skin cells together (desmosomes) are also pH dependent. A neutral pH leads to retained corneocytes (flaky skin).
